VILLA MALOLO
If you think artist Genola de Jong lives in paradise (see our profile on De Jong’s Byron Bay abode here) well – wait till you see her holiday house. Nestled within a private acre of tropical gardens and coconut palms on Fiji’s Malolo Iailli Island is De Jong’s home away from home – the breathtaking Villa Malolo. Built by her husband, Simon, before the couple met, the newly renovated villa faces the sunset, affording stunning views of the crystal clear lagoon and neighbouring islands and direct access to a secluded white sand beach. Two swimming pools, several outdoor decks with seating daybeds and hammocks and large, open plan living spaces allow De Jong and her husband to entertain effortlessly from this pristine location. Villa Malolo is also available for holiday rentals. Here, De Jong shares with us what makes this property so special.
How did the beautiful Villa Malolo come about? My partner Simon had built the house before I met him, about 24 years ago, but it has continued to evolve and change over the years and we juut finished a renovation on it, so it’s looking pretty good.
How would you describe the atmosphere of Villa Malolo? What type of guests will it attract? It’s rustic and simple, open planned, large spaces with high ceilings. All white and timber. Island style. Guests are from all over the world, it’s great for families.
What are your favourite pieces in the villa? The artwork I guess, because everything is built in, so there isn’t really much furniture in the house.
Describe Villa Malolo in three words. Cool Rustic Chic
What is unique about the Villa’s location? It has stairs to it’s own private beach. Amazing views of the sea and surrounding islands. It is also a short walk (or bike ride) to Musket Cove Resort restaurants and shops.
You live in a tropical paradise and have a holiday home in a tropical paradise… what are the similarities and differences between the two locations? Which feels most like home to you? Ha! Yes, well, we did go to Fiji a lot more when we lived in Sydney! Byron is home, but Fiji is a magic place. It’s great for us to go to Fiji in winter and the kids love it. We have a boat there and can go exploring islands and snorkelling (things which we don’t do here).
